Over her career so far she has been shortlisted for  the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, The Roald Dahl Funny Prize, nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal and placed second in the Macmillan Prize, all since 2011! ”I can’t come back,’ said Steven. ‘Sergeant Starfish fired me for being too much of a renegade.”

I found this book on my lunch hour whilst trying to find something to cheer myself up on a frightfully cold and wet Oxford afternoon. I scanned the displays and something caught my eye… Steven Seagull! There was no other choice, I just had to take this book up to the staff room and have a flick through and I’m so glad I did.

Steven Seagull is a retired police officer who was forced to leave the force protecting Beach City for ‘being too much of a renegade.’ However, there’s a criminal at large, a dastardly character who has been digging holes all over Beach City, ruining volley ball games and marooning ice cream vans. There’s only one person who can catch such a villain, someone who knows Beach City like the back of his wing, the radical, the tenacious, Steven Seagull… ACTION HERO!

This book will have the whole family laughing! Dolan’s illustrations are wonderful and the characters she has created to inhabit Beach City are simply hilarious! Yet again, this is one the older readers are going to love just as much as the younger ones.
