Fright Club by Ethan Long

Halloween 2015 Review!

There are two kinds of people: those who love all things scary and then there’s those who don’t. I think this is also true for children and when I was a child I definitely fell into the latter category. That’s why  I think Fright Club (2015) is such a great book for children as it applies a whimsical spin to those traditional monsters who are renowned for inciting fear. Ethan Long is an award-winning author and illustrator, with over 70 titles to his name, and I believe he’s hit the nail right on the coffin with his latest work.

Tfright-clubhe Fright Club are a group of characters clearly inspired by classic horror villains, I don’t think you will need help figuring out which classic characters Long decided to go with. Members of the fright club include: Vladimir the Vampire, Fran K. Stein, Virginia Wolf and Sandy Witch. They are all part of the Fright Club because they are the most terrifying monsters there are. On Halloween Eve members of the Fright Club meet up to practice their fear tactics to make sure they’re all prepared for Operation Kiddie Scare! However, on this Halloween Eve the Fright Club are visited by some of the neighborhood critters who ask if they’re allowed to join the club on Operation Kiddie Scare. The current Fright Club members laugh, for they are the scariest monsters to have ever been, how can the likes of a rabbit and a tortoise join their ranks? The Fright Club soon regret their decision to be so dismissive of the neighborhood critters and receive some of their own spooky medicine.

Ethan Long does a brilliant job of creating something fun whilst embracing the essence of Halloween. The Illustrations are fantastic, the perfect combination of comical characters and expressions finished with a true All Hallows’ Eve pallet. I think this book is perfect for parents who want to read something Halloween inspired to children who are less inclined to enjoy the frights and the thrills which come with this time of the year. Fright Club teaches us that even vampires and witches get scared, so it’s okay for you to sometimes be scared too.
